Basic definitions - PR and marketing

PR and marketing - so close and at the same time completely different areas of strategic enterprise management. Both terms have many definitions. What is public relations? What is marketing?

PR, or public relations, is shaping the company's relations with the environment in order to create and maintain the desired image, gain general acceptance and build an advantage over the competition. These are activities aimed at creating and maintaining positive relationships with individual target groups of the company. The recipients include: customers, business partners, media representatives and employees. PR uses various techniques and tools and takes the form of a dialogue with the environment. Public relations activities must be well-thought-out, planned and long-term, based on a thoroughly prepared strategy.

Marketing, on the other hand, is a management method in a market and customer-oriented company. It can be defined as a process supporting the sale of products and services, carried out with the use of various methods, techniques and ways of influencing recipients. The purpose of marketing is to identify the needs of potential customers and meet those needs. Sometimes the brands themselves create the demand for their products, instilling specific values in the recipients. Properly implemented marketing brings win-win effects - customer needs are met and the company generates profits. Marketing activitiesjust like public relations activities, they must be based on a reliable, individually prepared strategy. The strategy should take into account various market factors, including competition, consumer trends and current events.

In theory, PR and marketing is something completely different. How is it in practice?

PR in practice

Public relations is divided into two areas:

  • strategic, long-term activities,
  • ad hoc actions in response to the company's problems - the so-called Crisis PR.

The aim of PR, depending on the adopted strategy, may be to present the company as a thriving, coherent, valuable whole, to develop brand awareness in the society and build good relations with the environment. PR is also used to create favorable relations with employees, notify recipients about the company's position on a given matter and contact local authorities. PR reduces conflicts, works out compromises and strengthens the company's position on the market, and thus supports its functioning in every strategic area of management - also in marketing.

Marketing in practice

Marketing recognizes, stimulates, shapes and meets the needs of customers, while ensuring a profit for the brand. The basis for creating an effective marketing strategy should be a comprehensive analysis of the marketing environment, taking into account all external factors that have a potential impact on the final success. Consumer research, which identifies customer needs, tracks the process of making purchasing decisions and assesses the potential of specific market sectors, is also of key importance.

Marketing activities include promotion and advertising. As part of marketing, campaigns and marketing campaigns are created to strengthen brand awareness in the market, shape the demand for specific products or services and support sales. The application also has a big impact on marketing pricing strategythat should be attractive to the customer and profitable for the brand at the same time.

PR and marketing - 3 main differences

Let's organize the information that we have presented so far. There are 3 basic differences between PR and marketing:

  1. objective,
  2. target group,
  3. content.

1. Purpose

Main goal of PR is to build a good reputation of the company and gain trust among the environment. This does not always have a direct impact on increasing sales. Public relations indirectly promotes the company through appropriate communication in the media, participation in events or supporting important initiatives. The goal of marketing is to increase sales efficiency and generate attractive profits by creating demand for specific products or services.

2. Target group

PR and marketing strategies are targeted at other recipients. The marketing plan mainly focuses on acquiring new customers and retaining existing ones. On the other hand, the idea of public relations activities is to influence various target groups - not only potential and current customers, but also the media, employees, investors, suppliers, opinion leaders and other recipients.

3. Content

The difference between PR and marketing is also different content. PR focuses on improving the image and maintaining good relations with the environment. For this, it uses typical for public relations instruments, and in this press releases, expert materials, reports and research, as well as universal tools, e.g. sponsored articles. In marketing, it is used:

  • offline tools - incl. leaflets, billboards, stands, press advertisements, radio advertisements,
  • online tools - incl. advertising banners, e-mail marketing, social media, SEO, word of mouth marketing.

Although PR and marketing are separate areas of business, we should not separate them. To be effective and effective, they must cooperate with each other. PR can be considered one of the elements of marketing, because building a positive brand image strengthens marketing activities.
