ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MARKETING

An AI agent is a program built on a language model that plans its own next steps and uses tools (search, files, spreadsheets, email) to reach a set goal. An AI assistant responds to a prompt. An agent is given a task and decides for itself how to carry it out. In marketing and PR it saves a good deal of time, provided it is clear from the outset where it must stop and hand the decision back to a person.

In 60 seconds AI agents in a nutshell

  • In one sentence: a program that is given a goal, breaks it into steps and reaches for tools itself, rather than simply answering a question.
  • Where it delivers most: in work that comes back every week in the same form, e.g. media monitoring, reports, competitor radar, sorting enquiries.
  • Main cost: not the model fee but the build and testing, and then the human time spent on oversight.
  • First project: one repeatable task whose output can be assessed and whose human working time can be measured.
  • Red line: any external action (sending, publishing, payment) without human approval, and hidden instructions in the content it reads.

AI agent: what it is, in plain words

If you are asking what an AI agent is, think of a junior colleague. You do not give them a list of clicks. You give them a task, for example “prepare a morning round-up of brand mentions and flag three issues for decision”, and they work out for themselves where to look, what to discard, how to group the topics and in what form to deliver the result.

Where the term agentic AI comes from, and how to tell an agent from an ordinary chat, we break down in our article on what AI agents and agentic AI are. We have gathered the broader picture, from strategy to law, in our guide to artificial intelligence in business. Here we stay with the day-to-day practice of a marketing and PR team.

How does an AI agent differ from an AI assistant?

The point is not which model is cleverer. What matters is who runs the work. An assistant waits for your every instruction; an agent runs the task itself, and you approve the result at agreed points. If a well-configured chat is enough for now, have a look at our piece on how to work with an AI assistant in business day to day.

How an AI agent works: goal, tools, loop and stopping point

Every agent, whatever tool it was built in, works to a similar rhythm. It receives a goal and instructions, plans the first step, reaches for a tool, assesses the result and decides what to do next. The loop keeps turning until the goal is reached or the agent arrives at the point where it has to stop.

That last part matters most. And it is the one most often skipped. The stopping point is the moment when the agent hands the decision back to a person: before sending an email, publishing a post, changing a campaign budget or deleting a file. At Commplace® we call this the principle of a human in the decision loop.

An agent also draws on company knowledge. When it has to answer based on your documents, price lists or procedures, it usually uses a technique called RAG (it first searches the documents for relevant passages and only then writes the answer). We show how this works and when it pays off, with examples, in the article RAG, or AI built on company knowledge.

AI agents in marketing and PR, with examples

The tasks that work best are those that come back daily or weekly, have a clear output and currently eat up several hours of someone’s tedious work.

  • Media monitoring. Every day the agent reviews mentions, discards duplicates, groups topics and in the morning puts a report on your desk with three issues for decision. We described what to look for when choosing a tool in our piece on AI media monitoring.
  • Competitor radar. Once a week it looks at competitors’ websites and publications, checks their offers and records the changes in a single spreadsheet.
  • Monthly report. Zbiera dane z kilku źródeł, liczy wskaźniki i pisze roboczy komentarz. Liczby i wnioski sprawdza potem analityk.
  • Evidence check. A separate agent checks that every figure in a piece has a source and a date before the text reaches a person.
  • Initial enquiry triage. It sorts what has come in from customers and prepares a short note for the salesperson before the call.

Jak zbudować agenta od podstaw, pokazujemy w poradniku how to create an AI agent.

The view reproduced is modeled after the dashboards provided to customers. The names, numbers, and terms are examples and show the way the system works, not the results of a specific company.

Who an AI agent is for, and in what situation

An AI agent in marketing makes sense where the team is drowning in preparatory work and has little time left for thinking. Here are situations in which your own AI agent usually pays for itself quickly:

  • the PR team reviews dozens of sources by hand every day and pastes mentions into a report,
  • marketing spends two or three days every month gathering data from several systems into one presentation,
  • sales receives enquiries from a form and by email, some come in via LinkedIn, and nobody sorts them before the call,
  • the company is preparing a proposal or tender and needs a quick overview of the market and competitors.

How much an AI agent costs and what drives the price

To the question of how much an AI agent costs, there is no single answer. You build the price from four blocks: model usage fees (depending on the number and length of tasks), tools with integrations, build time with testing, and maintenance with human oversight. Model prices change every few months. That is why, before we quote a figure, we calculate it for a specific task: how many times a day the agent runs, on how much data and how many hours it gives back to the team.

Tani agent bywa drogi.

Hasło „agent AI cena” zwykle prowadzi do tabel abonamentów, a w nich brakuje najdroższego składnika, czyli godzin człowieka. Zespół Commplace AI przygotuje z Tobą taki rachunek: model, platforma, budowa i nadzór w jednej tabeli.

How to build your own AI agent in five steps

For a full overview of tools, from off-the-shelf platforms to custom code, see our guide how to build an AI agent step by step. Below is the short version we start every project with.

  1. STEP 01Describe one task

One repeatable task and its output: what is to be produced, for whom and how often. “Marketing automation” is not a task. “Monday mentions report for the board” is.

  2. STEP 02List the tools and data

Only the ones the agent genuinely needs. Grant the least access possible: a reporting agent does not need permission to send emails.

  3. STEP 03Define stopping points

Write down where the agent hands the decision back to a person. Always before sending and publishing. And always before a payment or deleting data.

  4. STEP 04Test on past data

Run the agent on data from the past few weeks and compare its output with a person’s work. Look at time and at the number of errors.

  5. STEP 05Launch with a log

Every action the agent takes goes into a log. For the first month, read it every week.

When an agent pays off, and when it does not yet

Pierwsze tygodnie to zawsze testy i poprawki, a w gorącym okresie nikt nie znajdzie czasu, żeby spokojnie porównać wynik agenta z pracą człowieka.

Hold off if the data is scattered across employees’ inboxes, the procedure changes every week or nobody has time to review the results. A simple test: can you describe the task on one page so that a new team member could do it without asking questions? If not, start by tidying up the process and a simple automation without a model. We show this in our article on automation with AI and n8n, and we have set out the schedule for the whole rollout in our 90-day AI implementation plan.

Dziś robi go jedna osoba.

Zakres zostaje.

Agent przejmuje raport, a człowiek go tylko sprawdza. Na koniec liczysz czas netto i zestawiasz go z pomiarem sprzed startu.

Szerzej o tym, gdzie w takich projektach czają się ryzyka prawne i wizerunkowe, piszemy w tekście o the risks and ethics of AI in business.

Odpowiedź „to zależy” bez konkretu? Sygnał ostrzegawczy.

  1. W którym dokładnie miejscu agent się zatrzymuje i kto zatwierdza wysyłkę albo publikację?
  2. Pokażesz dziennik agenta z jednego dnia?
  5. Gdzie trafiają dane osobowe klientów i dziennikarzy i kto ma do nich dostęp?
  6. Jak wyłączyć agenta w minutę?

What risks an AI agent brings

  • Instruction injection (English prompt injection). Hidden instructions on a page or in a document the agent reads try to take it over. That is why external content must be data for it, never a command.
  • Acting without approval. An agent with access to email or an ad account can send or launch something. Sending, publishing, payments, deleting: only after human approval.
  • An error repeated across steps. A mistake in the first step carries through the whole task. A separate control agent and manually checked samples help. We explain where models’ made-up answers come from in our piece on AI hallucinations.
  • Data. What does the agent read, where does it save it and who can see its log? Personal data of customers and journalists is subject to GDPR even when a program processes it.

How to check whether an agent pays off

Before you start, measure two things: how long the task takes a person today and how many errors get through. After a month of the agent working, measure the same. What counts is net time, that is, including the time spent checking the results.

Are publications or enquiries going up? Do not credit the agent straight away. The fact that two things happened at the same time does not mean one caused the other, so compare the result with the same months of the previous year or with a team that worked without an agent. This is how we have assessed results in public relations for years, and just as with media relations what counts is what can be proven, not what looks nice on a chart. We describe the method on the page correlation vs impact.

Would you rather someone calculated this for you on a specific task? Talk to the Commplace AI agency. We implement step by step, with control points and impact measurement.

Where marketing teams most often burn their first agent

1
Building an “everything” agent

An agent with a general goal and access to every system makes mistakes more often and is hard to check. The cost is weeks of fixes and the team losing trust in the whole project.

2
No stopping point before sending

A single email with a journalist’s name misspelt or an out-of-date price can ruin a relationship built over years. Sending always happens after human approval.

3
Counting only the model price

A cheap model that makes more mistakes means more hours of checking. The real cost is the model plus the human time spent on checks.

4
No “before” measurement

If you do not measure time and errors before rollout, you cannot prove the saving. The project will be judged on gut feeling and will be the first to go when budgets are cut.

5
Treating internet content as instructions

An agent that follows instructions found on the pages it reads can be hijacked. The cost: a data leak, or action taken on the company’s behalf that nobody agreed to.

What marketing and PR teams ask us before launching an agent

What is an AI agent in simple terms?

It is a program you tell what to achieve, and it works out the steps itself and reaches for the tools it needs. A bit like a junior colleague who is given a task rather than a list of clicks. An agent does not take responsibility, though, so important decisions stay with a person.

How much does an AI agent cost per month?

The model alone is often anything from a few to a few hundred dollars a month, depending on the number of tasks and the model chosen (OpenAI price list, September 2026). On top of that come the platform and the build with testing, and finally human time for oversight. These are the items that usually determine the total cost.

Is there a free AI agent?

There are free tools for building agents, for example the self-hosted version of n8n (Community Edition). The language model the agent uses, however, is usually paid per use, and the time for building and oversight costs money too.

Can you let an AI agent send emails to clients?

Technically yes, but we do not recommend it without human approval. An agent can prepare a message, choose the recipients and schedule the send. Leave the click on “send” to the person responsible for the client relationship.

Will an AI agent replace a marketing specialist?

It will take over some of the repetitive work: gathering data, first drafts of reports, organising information. It will not take over decisions, relationships or responsibility. Our principle is: AI will not replace people. It will replace guesswork.

How is an AI agent different from a chatbot?

A chatbot converses and answers questions, usually following a script or drawing on a knowledge base. An AI agent plans its own steps and uses tools. It can look up data, save it in a spreadsheet and prepare a report without needing to be led by the hand.

Can an AI agent work with personal data?

It can, but then the same GDPR rules apply as when people do the work: purpose of processing, minimum scope of data and an agreement with the tool provider. The safest approach is to give the agent access only to the data the task genuinely requires.

Agent AI ile kosztuje w małym dziale marketingu?
