Guide: AI in business › AI implementation, tools and team skills
A good AI course with a certificate is one after which you can do something at work that you could not do before; the certificate is only confirmation, not the goal. The market offers free beginner courses, such as the Google and SGH programme or Elements of AI, paid courses from tool vendors and specialist tracks for developers. Below we compare them, set out costs and pitfalls, and show how to choose a course that fits your work.
In 60 seconds Before you pay for a course
- What it is: a course that ends with a document confirming completion. Its value depends on who issues it and what it really teaches.
- Who will find it useful: people who are starting out with AI, want to make better use of it in their profession or are preparing for technical work.
- Price: from zero (e.g. Umiejętności Jutra: AI, Elements of AI) to subscriptions on course platforms and expensive technical tracks.
- How to choose: first name the task at work you want to do better, then look for a course that teaches exactly that.
- Red flags: a “job guarantee”, a course without exercises and the belief that a company must have certified employees.
What an AI course with a certificate is and what the certificate is worth
An AI course with a certificate is an artificial intelligence course that ends with a document confirming completion, usually after passing tests or assignments. The value of such a document depends on two things: who issues it (a university, a tool vendor, a training company) and whether it tests skills or merely attendance.
First, a common misunderstanding. Since 2 February 2025, companies have been obliged to ensure their employees' AI literacy (Article 4 of the AI Act), but the European Commission states explicitly that a certificate is not required for this, as an internal record of training is enough. So the certificate is mainly for you: for your CV, for a conversation about promotion, for putting your knowledge in order. How these rules look as a whole is explained in our overview The AI Act in Poland.
Employers care about something other than the document itself: whether, after the course, you can prepare a better report, check a model's output or build a simple automated task. That is why the best AI courses end with a project you can show. Where team-wide learning fits into all this is shown in our guide to how companies use AI.
Who an AI course is for and in what situation it helps
AI courses differ so much that the question ‘which AI course should I choose’ makes no sense without answering others: who are you, and what do you want to do differently?
- You are starting from zero and want to understand how AI works before you start using it, so you are looking for an AI course for beginners, ideally a free one.
- You work in marketing, sales, HR or finance and want to use AI in your tasks, so you need a job-specific or tool-specific course.
- You lead a team and need to decide how people should work with AI. Look for a course for managers (sometimes called an “AI manager course”) with a focus on rules and risks.
- You are a developer or want to become one, so you are interested in a technical track, e.g. an AI engineer course.
- Looking for deeper, structured knowledge with a university diploma? Then a better option may be postgraduate studies in AI.
Types of AI courses compared
AI courses can be divided into five groups. Each meets a different need, and the certificate means something different in each.
| Type of course | Example | Who it is for | What the certificate says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basics, free | Elements of AI, Umiejętności Jutra: AI | anyone starting out | that you know the basic concepts and risks |
| Tool vendor courses | Google AI Essentials, OpenAI certification courses | users of specific tools | that you can use the given vendor’s ecosystem |
| Tool courses | ChatGPT course, Copilot course, Claude AI course, AI graphics course | people who already have access to the tool | that you know the features, not necessarily the applications |
| Professional courses | AI in marketing, AI in HR and recruitment, AI in business | specialists and managers | that you can apply AI in your work |
| Technical tracks | AI engineer course, AI course for developers | developers, analysts | that you can build solutions, if the course ends with a project |
Google AI courses and the Google programme with SGH
The searches “Google AI course” and “Google SGH AI course” usually refer to two different things. The first is Google AI Essentials, a course on Coursera which, according to Google, can be completed in under 5 hours. In the US and Canada it costs 49 dollars a month after a 7-day free trial; in other countries the price may differ (as of September 2026). It ends with a Google certificate.
The second is the free “Umiejętności Jutra: AI” (Skills of Tomorrow: AI) programme run by Google and the SGH Warsaw School of Economics. The third edition started in February 2026: five weeks, more than 25 hours of material (video recordings, webinars, Q&A sessions) and, at the end, a certificate issued by Google and SGH. According to the organisers, previous editions received 110,000 applications and 60,000 people earned the certificate; the programme is aimed at business owners and employees, so the examples concern business rather than programming.
Both courses are good at structuring the basics. Neither, however, knows your company, your data or the rules that apply in your team.
AI courses from scratch: Elements of AI and OpenAI courses
If you are looking for an AI course from scratch that explains what artificial intelligence actually is, Elements of AI is a good choice. It is a free online course created by the University of Helsinki and Reaktor, available in Polish since November 2020 thanks to cooperation with the European Commission and the Digital Poland Foundation. Once you pass the exercises, you can download a certificate of completion. The course does not teach you to use a specific tool. It teaches you to understand what AI can and cannot do.
People who search for an ‘OpenAI course’ are usually looking for materials from the makers of ChatGPT. In December 2025 OpenAI announced its first certification courses, including AI Foundations, which teaches practical work with AI in various professions. At launch the course was available in pilot programmes with employers and public institutions, so before signing up, check whether it is available to you and in which language.
The basics are a good start, but not the end. After a general course, move on to one that shows AI in your profession. That is where the real change begins.
Courses on ChatGPT, Copilot, prompt engineering and AI agents
A ChatGPT or Copilot course makes sense when you already have access to the tool and want to use it better. Before you choose, check which tool your company works with; we have set out the differences between the three most popular ones, comparing ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot.
A prompt engineering course, i.e. learning to write instructions for a model, is often overhyped. Models understand ordinary instructions better and better, so rather than “magic formulas”, what matters more is giving the model context and an example, and clearly describing what a good result looks like. We have collected ready-made templates for marketing in our set of marketing prompts.
Courses on AI agents and on building AI agents are the next level: they teach you to build programs that carry out several steps in sequence on their own. The same goes for AI automation and chatbot-building courses, which show how to connect tools into workflows. Once you have mastered the basics, this is a good direction. To start with, read how to create an AI agent, and see what it looks like in practice automation with AI and n8n.
AI courses for marketing, HR and business
Job-specific courses deliver the most, because they teach on tasks similar to yours; a good AI course for marketing covers writing and editing content, analysing campaign data, fact-checking and the rules for labelling AI-generated content. An AI course for business, in turn, should teach you to prepare decisions, analyse competitors and produce reports for the board.
AI courses in HR and recruitment call for particular attention to regulation: AI systems used to select candidates fall into the high-risk category under the AI Act, and the obligations for them have been postponed to 2 December 2027. What this means for HR departments is explained in our guide AI in HR and recruitment.
If you work in PR, an AI course will not replace the fundamentals of the profession. How to build skills in this industry is covered in our guide on how to become a PR specialist.
How to choose an AI course step by step
Choosing a course takes an hour if you start from the task rather than from a list of the “best courses”. Five steps are enough.
- STEP 01Choose one task
Write down what you want to do better at work thanks to AI, for example prepare reports faster or write better first drafts.
- STEP 02Check your level
If you do not understand how a language model differs from a search engine, start with a free basics course.
- STEP 03Compare three courses
Check who runs each of them, how many practical exercises there are, whether the course ends with a project and who issues the certificate, then drop the one that performs worst on exercises.
- STEP 04Check how up to date it is
AI tools change every few months, so a course recorded two years ago may teach features that no longer exist and skip the ones used most often today.
- STEP 05Plan practice after the course
Set aside a few weeks to apply the knowledge to one task, and compare the time and quality of your work before and after the course.
How much does an AI course with a certificate cost?
The price range is very wide, and price does not always go hand in hand with quality. Free courses from universities and tool vendors often teach the basics better than expensive courses recorded in a hurry. What is worth paying for? Exercises with feedback, work on your own tasks and access to the instructor.
| Factor | What lowers the price | What raises the price |
|---|---|---|
| Format | recordings for self-study | live classes, group work |
| Feedback | automated tests | projects assessed by the instructor |
| Certificate issuer | course platform | a university or a well-known technology vendor |
| Scope | basics and one tool | technical track, building solutions |
| Payment model | free course or short subscription | one-off fee for a long programme |
When a course, when in-house training, and when postgraduate studies
An individual course works well when you learn on your own and at your own pace. When a whole team is learning, training built on the company's own tasks, combined with rules for using AI, works better; how it differs from a course and how to choose it is explained in AI training for companies. Postgraduate studies make sense when you need broad knowledge and a university diploma, and you have a year to study.
The right time for a course is when you have a real task to practise on, because a course taken “just in case”, with no chance to practise, usually fades from memory within a few weeks. For companies that want to train their communications teams, we offer workshops as part of PR Academy, run on situations close to real ones rather than on generic examples.
Pitfalls learners fall into most often
A collection of certificates without practice tells an employer little. Cost: time and money spent on documents that do not help in a job interview or in everyday tasks.
A course on building AI agents without the fundamentals ends with copying instructions without understanding them. Then frustration sets in. The course is abandoned halfway.
AI tools change their features every few months, so a course from two years ago teaches outdated things, and disappointment comes with the first attempt at work.
Courses often have you practise on real texts from work, and if company data goes into a tool without a proper agreement, you risk breaching company rules and the GDPR before you have even finished the first module.
Knowledge without application fades quickly. Cost: after a month you go back to your old habits, and the course changes nothing in your work.
Questions people ask before signing up for an AI course
Which AI course with a certificate should I choose to start with?
To start with, a free basics course is enough, for example Elements of AI in Polish or the Umiejętności Jutra: AI programme run by Google and SGH, as both end with a certificate and put your knowledge in order. Then choose a course tailored to your own profession.
Are there free AI courses with a certificate?
Yes. Free options include Elements of AI (University of Helsinki, available in Polish) and the Umiejętności Jutra: AI programme, in which the certificate is issued by Google and SGH. Check the date of the next edition of the Google and SGH programme, as it runs in intakes.
Is a certificate from an AI course required by the AI Act?
No. The AI Act (Article 4) obliges companies to ensure their employees’ AI literacy, but the European Commission explains that a certificate is not needed for this. A company can keep an internal record of training.
How much does the Google AI course cost?
Google AI Essentials on Coursera costs 49 dollars a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day free trial; the price may differ in other countries (September 2026), while the Umiejętności Jutra: AI programme run by Google and SGH is free. You do not always have to pay for a certificate.
Is a prompt engineering course necessary?
It is useful, but not as a separate skill detached from work. Models understand ordinary instructions better and better, so what matters more is being able to provide context and an example and to describe the criteria for a good result in your own tasks.
How long does an AI course for beginners take?
From a few hours to a few weeks. Google states that AI Essentials can be completed in under 5 hours, and the Google and SGH programme lasts five weeks and includes more than 25 hours of material.
Is an AI course enough to work with AI in a company?
A course gives you the basics, but it does not know your company's rules and data. For real work you also need company rules for using AI and practice on your own tasks, ideally under the eye of someone who checks the results.
