What postgraduate AI studies are and how they differ from a course

Postgraduate studies are a form of education for people who already hold a university degree. They usually last two semesters, end with a postgraduate certificate and are run by a university according to a curriculum with a set number of hours. Postgraduate programmes in artificial intelligence usually combine four modules: technology fundamentals (what machine learning and generative AI are), business applications, law and ethics, and a final project.

A course is shorter and narrower: it teaches one skill or one tool in a few days or weeks. In-house training works on the tasks of a specific team. Postgraduate studies make sense when you need the broad picture, because you will be planning an implementation, assessing risk and talking to vendors and lawyers. Who postgraduate AI studies in business are for, and when they pay off

The programme descriptions show that universities aim them primarily at managers and analysts, HR and marketing specialists, as well as entrepreneurs and consultants. In practice, AI-in-business programmes pay off most in three situations.

• You are going to lead an AI implementation in your company. The board expects a plan with a budget and a risk assessment, and you need a language that lets you communicate with IT, lawyers and vendors.
• You run a department that AI is changing fastest, such as marketing, customer service, HR or finance, and you need to decide which tasks tools will take over and which stay with people.
• You are changing career path and want to move from analytics, sales or communications into the role of AI project coordinator in your organisation.

Examples of postgraduate programmes in artificial intelligence in Poland

Below are a few programmes from the 2026/2027 academic-year intake, described on the basis of university websites (as of 24 September 2026). These are examples, not a ranking. There are many more on offer, including in other cities.

Specialist or broad? Postgraduate AI programmes in HR, marketing and finance

Programmes fall into general ones (‘AI in business’) and sector-specific ones: AI in HR, in finance and controlling, artificial intelligence law, AI in data analysis. The choice depends on whether you are to lead change across the whole company or in a single department.

Postgraduate AI programmes in HR have an extra reason to exist: recruitment and employee assessment are an area the AI Act (the EU regulation on artificial intelligence) treats as high-risk. How much postgraduate AI studies cost and what drives the budget

Tuition is only part of the cost. Below are the items you need to budget for before deciding, with example amounts from university websites (2026/2027 intake). The easiest one to overlook is time.

KFS co-funding: how an employer can pay less

The National Training Fund (Krajowy Fundusz Szkoleniowy, KFS) is money that district labour offices pass on to employers to train employees and business owners, including for postgraduate studies. According to PIT.pl of 2 February 2026, one of the four KFS priorities for 2026 is training related to new technologies and work tools, ‘with particular emphasis on digital skills, AI and so-called green skills’.

The same text sets out the funding rules: up to 70% of training costs, and up to 90% in companies with up to 9 employees, capped per participant at 200% of the average salary in the given year. According to RMF24, from 2026 applications are submitted via the praca.gov.pl portal to the relevant district labour office. Funding rounds at the offices are limited by budget and often close in the first half of the year, so check the deadline in your district before you sign an agreement with the university.

How to choose a postgraduate programme in artificial intelligence, step by step

Programmes look similar in their headlines. They differ in the details. These steps will help you tell practical programmes apart from a round-up of the latest trends before you sign up for a year of weekends.

1. STEP 01Write down the business problem you want to solve

   One sentence: ‘I need to prepare a plan for implementing AI in customer service’ or ‘I need to assess which HR tools are lawful’. Use that sentence to test every programme.

2. STEP 02Read the curriculum hour by hour

   Work out how many hours are spent on your own project and workshops and how many on lectures, because a programme made up solely of tool names will date faster than your diploma.

3. STEP 03Check who teaches

   Look for practitioners who have implemented AI in companies alongside academic lecturers. The names of the teaching staff are usually on the programme page, so check their professional profiles before you pay the first instalment.

4. STEP 04Ask about law and ethics

   A good programme has a separate module on the AI Act, data protection and copyright, because without it you will learn what is possible, but not what is permitted.

5. STEP 05Compare the format with your calendar

   Weekend sessions every two to three weeks are a real effort for a whole year. Online study saves travelling. It does, however, require discipline.

6. STEP 06Apply for co-funding before enrolling

   If the employer is to use KFS, the application must be decided before the programme starts.

Postgraduate studies, a course or in-house training?

Not everyone needs a year of study. The table helps match the format to the goal.

When to enrol in postgraduate AI studies, and when to wait

Most programmes start in the autumn. In the 2026/2027 intake, several universities give an enrolment deadline of 30 September 2026 (e.g. UEP, Kozminski University), and classes at UEP start on 14 November. Some universities also open a spring-semester intake, so if you miss the autumn, check February.

Wait if you do not yet know what you want to learn. A few weeks of working with tools on everyday tasks (for example with an assistant in your office suite, such as Microsoft 365 Copilot) will show whether you need broad knowledge or whether a short course is enough. Also check whether the company is planning its own training programme; in that case postgraduate studies may be a second step for the one person who will lead the change.

What the AI Act says about staff competence and how it affects your choice of programme

Article 4 of the AI Act, applicable since 2 February 2025, requires companies that provide or deploy AI systems to ensure their staff have AI literacy. In its questions and answers, the European Commission explains that no certificate is needed for this: internal documentation of training and other activities, tailored to roles and the systems used, is sufficient.

The practical conclusion: postgraduate studies are not a legal obligation and do not “tick the box” for the whole company. They can, however, prepare a person who will plan training for everyone else and document it in a way that can be shown during an inspection. How to put the studies to use in your company so they don’t end with a diploma

What works best is a simple agreement with your line manager before the start: the final project addresses a real business problem, and after each semester the graduate shows the team what can be applied straight away. Such a project could be a pilot of one tool, a map of processes to automate or rules for using AI in the department.
