ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MARKETING

llms.txt is a text file placed in a website’s root directory which, in simple Markdown format, tells language models what the site is and which of its pages matter most. The idea was proposed in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard on llmstxt.org. Does it work? In Google, no — the company has confirmed this in writing. In other AI tools, sometimes, and more for technical documentation than for questions about companies. Below you will find the details, server log data and how we use the file ourselves.

In 60 seconds llms.txt without the myths

  • What the file is: a list of a site’s most important pages in Markdown format, written for language models, at twojadomena.pl/llms.txt.
  • When it makes sense: with an extensive offering, documentation or a knowledge base; a small brochure site will gain little from it.
  • Effort: about an hour, and in WordPress the free version of the Yoast SEO plugin will generate the file with a single click.
  • First step: choose 10–30 pages that best describe the company and write one factual sentence about each.
  • What not to expect: the file will not improve visibility in Google and will not replace indexing, good content or media mentions.

What is llms.txt?

Czasem obok leży drugi plik, llms-full.txt, with fuller content gathered in one place; Anthropic does this, for example, in its developer documentation.

Why have such a file at all? A language model that has to read a page usually gets code full of menus and footers, plus scripts and banners, and extracting meaning from all that costs it time and space in the so-called context window (i.e. the amount of text the model can process at once). The author of the proposal reasoned simply: since search engine bots have robots.txt and a sitemap, models would benefit from a short, clean cheat sheet.

One thing needs saying right away: llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard. Nobody has to read it, and no major AI company has publicly committed to using it when its model answers users’ questions about companies, products or services. If you want to see where this file sits on the map of the whole topic, take a look at our guide to AI for marketing and PR.

What does an llms.txt file look like? Example and structure

The specification on llmstxt.org is short. Only the heading with the site name is mandatory. The rest are recommendations. The order of elements is as follows:

  1. A first-level heading (a single # in Markdown) with the company or site name. This is the only mandatory element.
  2. A blockquote (the > character) with a one- or two-sentence summary: who you are, who you work for, since when.
  3. Any number of paragraphs with additional explanations, without headings.
  4. Sections with second-level headings (##) containing lists of links in the format: page name with address, followed by a colon and a short description.
  5. Optionally, a section called ‘Optional’ with less important pages that the model can skip when it is short of space.

Does llms.txt work? What we know in September 2026

Honestly? It depends on who is reading. We have gathered what can be verified in sources and set it out in a table.

WhoWhat we know (September 2026)
GoogleGuide to generative features (10 July 2026): there is no need to create new machine-readable files, text files for AI or special markup, because Google Search does not use them. Such a file neither helps nor harms.
AI companiesSome publish llms.txt for their own technical documentation, e.g. Anthropic (platform.claude.com/llms.txt, together with llms-full.txt). This signals that the format serves developers and AI agents reading documentation.
OpenAITo show pages in its search answers, ChatGPT uses the OAI-SearchBot crawler and the rules in robots.txt. Its public documentation does not mention llms.txt.
Server logsOtterlyAI experiment (February 2026): over 90 days, AI bots visited the llms.txt file 84 times out of more than 62,100 visits to the whole site, i.e. approx. 0.1% of traffic — less often than an average subpage.

Who is an llms.txt file worthwhile for?

The conclusion from all this is simple: llms.txt is a cheap insurance policy, not a lever. It makes most sense where AI agents (programs that carry out tasks on their own, for example gathering information from websites) can actually read your content:

  • A technology company with documentation, an API or a knowledge base. This is where the format was born and where it is used most often.
  • A B2B company with an extensive offering that is easy to get lost in, because it covers a dozen or more services across many sectors and locations.
  • A site with reports and proprietary data that you want cited from the correct address.
  • A small brochure site with five subpages. The file won’t hurt, but your time is better spent on the content of the subpages themselves.

How to create an llms.txt file step by step

Preparing the file is an hour’s job. Deciding which pages should go in it takes longer than the writing itself.

  1. STEP 01Choose 10–30 pages

Services, working methods, reports with proprietary data, the ‘about us’ page, contact. Skip terms and conditions. Skip the cookie policy and blog tags too.

  2. STEP 02Add one sentence to each

Write specifically and without advertising slogans: what is on the page and who it is useful for. ‘Implementation pricing for companies with up to 250 employees’ says more than ‘the best solutions for your business’.

  3. STEP 03Write a company summary

At the top, the company name and two sentences with verifiable facts, i.e. scope of business, market and year of foundation. They must match the ‘about us’ page and directory listings, because contradictions do more harm than having no file at all.

  4. STEP 04Save and upload

Save plain text in UTF-8 encoding (so that special characters don’t get garbled) as llms.txt and upload it to the server’s root directory. Then open twojadomena.pl/llms.txt in a browser and check that it works.

  5. STEP 05Add updating to your procedures

A new service, a new report or a change of address means updating the file along with the page. An outdated llms.txt with dead links does worse than no file at all.

How llms.txt differs from robots.txt and a sitemap

Te trzy pliki często się myli, choć każdy robi coś innego. Zestawienie llms.txt a robots.txt i mapa strony wygląda tak. Najważniejsza różnica? Robots.txt to zakaz, który wyszukiwarki respektują, a llms.txt to podpowiedź, której nikt nie musi czytać.

llms.txt in WordPress: plugin or by hand?

If your site runs on WordPress with the Yoast SEO plugin, you can enable the file in the feature settings. Yoast generates llms.txt in the free version and refreshes it automatically. Convenient. However, the automation selects pages according to its own rules, so after enabling it, open the file and check that it points where you want.

Whichever route you choose, also check robots.txt. An AI bot block set up at some point ‘just in case’ excludes your site from ChatGPT answers more effectively than any llms.txt could ever get it in.

How much does llms.txt cost and when is it a waste of time?

Preparing the file itself is an hour’s work for someone who knows the offering, plus a few minutes with every change on the site. It should not be a separate product in an agency’s offering, because it requires no special knowledge or tools — just familiarity with your own offering and a few minutes’ attention with every change on the site. If someone prices the file alone at several thousand złoty, you are paying for a promise that cannot be measured.

Jeśli wybierasz wykonawcę, przyda się lista pytań z poradnika, how to choose a GEO agency. Samą pracę rozkładamy na części w tekście o tym, how SEO, GEO and AEO differ.

Firma B2B z czternastoma podstronami usług, blogiem i kilkoma raportami.

Zespół wybiera strony do pliku i każdą opisuje jednym zdaniem.

How do we do it at Commplace?

Our file commplace.pl/llms.txt prowadzi do stron usług i metod oraz do raportów z danymi, a aktualizujemy go przy nowych stronach ofertowych.

Publications in independent sources have a much bigger impact than the file. According to the Muck Rack study ‘What Is AI Reading?’ from May 2026, 84% of citations in the answers of three major models (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) come from earned media, which is why in our visibility work we combine the website with media relations. We explain how this works from the PR side in our article PR AI, and from the model’s side in our piece on how ChatGPT chooses companies to recommend.

Plik to drobiazg. Liczy się, czy modele cytują Twoje strony, a to sprawdza i poprawia nasza GEO agency. The first conversation is free — just write to us.

What most often undermines the point of an llms.txt file

1
Promising an effect in Google

2
A file instead of content

An llms.txt with links to pages that don’t answer customers’ questions won’t fix anything. A model that lands on an empty service page won’t cite it anyway, so instead of adding more links to the file, it is better to first add answers to the questions customers ask before buying to those subpages.

3
Outdated links and contradictory data

A file that leads to deleted pages or gives a different scope of services from the ‘about us’ page causes confusion. Contradictory information about a company online is a common cause of errors in AI answers.

4
Advertising slogans instead of descriptions

‘Market leader’ and ‘comprehensive solutions’ say nothing to either a machine or a human. The description should answer the question of what is on the page and who it is for.

5
A forgotten robots.txt

Blocking the OAI-SearchBot crawler excludes the site from ChatGPT search answers. No llms.txt can offset that cost, because a file of hints achieves nothing if the bot that would use it cannot access the site at all.

Questions about llms.txt we get from marketing departments

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a text file in Markdown format, placed in a website’s root directory, which tells language models what the site is and which pages matter most. The format was proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024. It is a proposal, not a binding standard.

Does llms.txt help with ranking in Google?

No. In its guide to generative features of 10 July 2026, Google wrote that its search engine does not use text files for AI and that such a file neither helps nor harms visibility. Results in Google are influenced by the quality and accessibility of the pages themselves.

How does llms.txt differ from robots.txt?

The robots.txt file tells bots what they must not fetch; it is a prohibition respected by search engines and most AI bots. The llms.txt file tells models what matters most, and nobody has to read it. For visibility in ChatGPT, robots.txt is more important.

Where should you put the llms.txt file?

In the domain’s root directory, so that it opens at twojadomena.pl/llms.txt. If the blog runs in a subdirectory as a separate installation, one file for the whole domain, including links to the most important articles, is enough.

What is llms-full.txt?

It is a supplementary file which, instead of a list of links, contains the full content of the most important pages in a single document. It is used mainly by sites with technical documentation, for example Anthropic. For a typical company website, a regular llms.txt is enough.

Is it worth paying for an llms.txt implementation?

Preparing the file itself takes an hour, so it should not be a separate product. Rather, pay for what surrounds it: choosing the pages to be cited, improving their content and measuring whether models actually use them.

How do you create llms.txt in WordPress?

The simplest way is to enable file generation in the Yoast SEO plugin; the feature is in the free version and refreshes the file automatically. Then take a look inside. For a complex offering, a hand-made file works better.
